Referral Process

It all starts with your PCP

Your Primary Care Physician (PCP) is your medical care partner. Your PCP is trained to handle most of your common health care needs. However, if you need more specialized treatment, your PCP may refer you to an appropriate specialist within his or her referral circle so that your care will be covered. Ask your PCP which providers are in his or her referral circle.

  • In order to have your specialist visit covered you must first obtain a referral from your PCP before seeing the specialist. If you obtain any specialist care without a referral (with the exception of Emergency Room Care), you will be responsible for the cost of that care.
  • Referrals will be limited to specialists, hospitals, home health agencies, skilled nursing facilities and durable medical equipment providers within your referral circle.
  • If you need more specialized visits than your PCP has authorized, contact your PCP for additional referrals.

Please call our Referral Department (508) 894-0400 if you need a referral from your Primary Care Physician to see a specialist.
