Federal Programs

Our primary sources of financial aid are the following federal programs:

Federal Pell Grant

This grant is administered directly by the Federal Department of Education to eligible students who are attending BHSON and who are enrolled in at least 195 clock hours. The amount of the award is based on the student’s eligibility for financial aid, the cost of school attendance, and the monies available nationally for this program. Students apply for a Pell Grant through submission of the FAFSA.

Direct Subsidized Stafford Loan

This program enables students who are enrolled on at least a half-time basis to borrow funds under a program regulated by the U.S. Department of Education. Repayment begins six months after the student graduates, leaves school or drops below at least half-time attendance. Students who wish to apply must file a FAFSA and BHSON Financial Aid application, which is available at the Financial Aid Office. Eligibility is determined on the basis of the FAFSA analysis.

Generally, the maximum loan amount for a Student is:

  • YEAR 1 $3,500
  • YEAR 2 $4,500

Students who transfer Clock hours in, please note your eligibility for Direct loans will be pro-rated based on the progression in the program.

A student has up to ten years to repay this loan and may repay at any time without penalty.

Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan

This program is for independent and dependent students, with an increase for dependent students whose parents cannot borrow under the Direct PLUS program. This is a non-need-based loan program. Repayment begins six months after the student graduates, leaves school, or drops below at least half-time attendance. Interest on this loan will be charged from the time the loan is disbursed until the loan is repaid in full. The Direct Unsubsidized Stafford loan provided an option to make interest-only payments while in school or to allow the interest to accumulate onto the principal amount. The total amount an eligible student may borrow at SH/BHSON for an academic year is the Direct Subsidized Stafford limit plus up to $6000 in Unsubsidized Loans not to exceed the total cost of attendance.

Direct PLUS Loan

This program is for parents of dependent students who may not qualify for sufficient need-based financial aid to cover the cost of attendance. The maximum amount borrowed cannot exceed the cost of education minus other financial aid/resources. The repayment length is 10 years. Eligibility is not based on financial need; however, a demonstration of creditworthiness is required.

Constitution Day

Every year on September 17, the Office of Financial Aid marks the signing of the final draft of the Constitution by putting on a program and/or event. A federal law enacted in December 2004 designated September 17 as “Constitution Day and Citizenship Day” to commemorate the signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787. Under this law, every school that receives federal funding for the fiscal year is required to hold an educational program for students designed around the Constitution.
