Signature Healthcare's top priority is keeping athletes safe. To help achieve that, we have partnered with many athletic programs to support the use of Concussion Vital Signs baseline and post injury neurological testing to their athletes.
A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury - or TBI- caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move quickly back and forth. This fast movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist in the skull, creating chemical changes in the brain and sometimes stretching or damaging the brain cells.
Signs and symptoms of concussion can show up right after the injury or may not appear to be noticed until days or weeks after the injury. If an athlete reports one or more symptoms of concussion after a bump, blow or jolt to the head or body, s/he should be kept out of play the day of the injury. The athlete should only return to play with permission from a health care professional experienced in evaluating for concussion.
